About Larry Finer

Larry Finer, PhD, brings more than two decades of experience as a researcher to his work as a data scientist with Metis in New York City. In this role, he focuses on machine learning in the areas of neural networks, regression and classification, and natural language processing. Since beginning at Metis in early 2019, Larry Finer has completed several projects, including one that used natural language processing techniques to analyze the use of slang in Urban Dictionary and another that predicted the likelihood of a flight being delayed.

Prior to Metis, Larry Finer spent two decades in the area of reproductive health while holding positions with institutions such as the Guttmacher Institute, Cyber Pathways, and Columbia University. During his tenure at Guttmacher from 1998 to 2018, he began as a senior research associate and served in increasingly senior positions to vice president. He also directed the Guttmacher Center for Population Research Innovation and Dissemination. Dr. Finer has also contributed to the field as the first author of more than two dozen scholarly articles.

Larry Finer has received numerous honors and awards over his career, including appearing on Thomson Reuters’ 2014 list of highly cited researchers and garnering the Outstanding Young Professional Award in the Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health Section from the American Public Health Association. Dr. Finer holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University.
